Abstract
This paper examines the period during which Europeans established themselves in northernmost New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) using accounts of early visitors to the area. In the late 19th century the region was notorious for the ferocity of the indigenous population and yet northern New Irelanders were soon in high demand as labor and after 1900 the area was rapidly incorporated into the plantation economy of German New Guinea. Cryptic references to indigenous social structure in early visitors' accounts are considered in the light of current social organization.
